“By far and away the best school I attended...” bullet2

Year 12 and 13 Course

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth"

Hebrews 11:1,3  Now faith is ... the evidence of things not seen. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

God created all matter in the beginning and sustains the universe by his mighty power.

CHEMISTRY is the study of the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter, especially of atomic and molecular systems.
Welcome to the NCEA level 2 and 3 Chemistry course. The chemistry curriculum contributes towards The New Zealand Curriculum Framework within the essential learning area of science. It is an interesting course as it involves qualitative and quantiative analysis using various analytical techniques, along with the theory. It also prepares you well for further study in Chemistry at tertiary levels.
  • There are 21 to 23 credits offered at each level
  • Some of the Achievement Standards are internally assessed
  • And some of the Achievement Standards are externally assessed at the end of the year

Year 12 Chemistry NCEA LEVEL 2Chem Gillies

At Year 12 we cover 6 achievement standards, with a total of 23 credits available.  The methods utilised to facilitate learning at this level include a specifically developed manual, which outlines the set theory work for each topic.  Along with a significant amount of practical experimental work which helps to enhance student understanding of concepts and increases their skill in handling chemicals and lab equipment.  Multimedia presentations are also used where further elaboration is required.

The achievement standards include:

AS91161       Quantitative analysis problems                                        4 Credits Int

AS91162       Identify Ions in solution                                                    3 Credits Int

AS91164       Understand bonding, structure, properties and energy   5 Credits Ext

AS91165       Understand properties of selected organic compounds   4 Credits Ext

AS91166       Understand chemical reactivity                                        4 Credits Ext

AS91197       Understanding of oxidation-reduction reactions               3 Credits Int

Year 13 Chemistry NCEA LEVEL 3

As per year 12, the study of chemistry in Year 13 involves a significant amount of practical experimental work, problem solving and multimedia presentations.  The year 13 course covers 5 achievement standards, with a total of 21 credits available.

The achievement standards include:

AS91388       Understanding of spectroscopic data                              3 Credits Int

AS91390       Thermochemical principles and properties of particles    5 Credits Ext
