LAVA CAVE 'RE-DISCOVERED" ON HEBRON SITE
Auckland Speleology Group members, Peter Crossley and Pete Smith, visited the school site on Wednesday 24th August to photograph the inside of the tomo (lava cave) under our lower field which had been previously mapped 50 years ago. They have been collating information about Auckland lava caves so that Auckland's cave heritage is not lost. So far almost 200 caves have been documented, but less than a quarter can still be entered. It is important that these ones are preserved. Peter states Aucklanders have not treated their caves well. Many have been used as rubbish holes or some have been blocked off to prevent entry, or, worse, people have collapsed them with bulldozers. Auckland is the only place in New Zealand where lava caves have been found. This is because lava tubes are formed by the surface of a lava flow crusting over and then the middle draining away when the source of supply dries up. This requires that the lava is fairly fluid, and to be found, the caves are not too old. In New Zealand that means less than 60,000 years old. Volcanoes like Ruapehu in the Central North Island have lava flows that are too sticky to form caves.
2010 HEBRON GALA
The Gala held on Saturday 16th October was a great success! The weather was brilliant (rain on Friday and Sunday), hundreds turned up, there was a good variety of stalls and activities, the entertainment was superb and the food was finger-lickin' delicious!
We take our hats off to our awesome organisers, Hebron mothers: Suzanne Berry and Monique Douglas. These two super mums first suggested having the gala, gaining support from staff and parents, organising and running meetings with stall holders, gaining donations from local businesses, dropping advertising material into letterboxes all over Mt.Albert, etc. etc. Well done Suzanne & Monique - the Hebron community salutes you for your hard work and commitment to the school.
Suzanne writes:
I can't believe a week ago has gone since we were running around setting up the School Gala! The sun was certainly turned on for us, and prayers answered, we were greatly blessed indeed-thank you Jesus! Importantly also, we just want to thank absolutely everyone from the School, and their extended family and friends who helped out, and to all those who contributed and donated to make this School Gala such a success! We have had nothing but positive feedback about Hebron and the Gala all round! It was a wonderful positive way to reach out to the Community, Businesses, family and friends and we would just like to say a very special thank you to you all! Without your help, donations and input, this would not have been possible. We also reached our fantastic Goal of $20,000! That means we will be able to go ahead with the changing sheds for the Junior/Middle School Pool and purchase a van with some extra sponsorship help for the Senior School. Thank you once again, to each and everyone of you, in enabling us to reach such an awesome result all round!
LEARNING TO BE SAFE IN THE WATER
Year 4 and 5 children from Rooms 14 and 9 went to the wave pools on Wednesday to learn about Water Safety. Five trained water safety instructors manned five different stations and taught skills included putting on lifejackets while in water; jumping into deep water from 2m height while wearing a lifejacket; learning about hypothermia (by being squirted with a cold hose); how to survive in water by making floatation objects out of clothes, plastic bags and bottles; how to remove clothing while in water; how to breathe underneath a capsized boat, and how to get on a boat; and procedures about rescuing people.

WACKY WEDNESDAY
Hebron staff and students had a "Wacky Wednesday" on Wednesday 18th August. Based on the Dr Seuss book Wacky Wednesday, where a boy wakes up to find a shoe on the wall, a tortoise in a tree and a pig without legs, the staff and students were invided to be wacky for the day. Children arrived at school in pyjamas, fairy outfits, clothes worn back to front and underpants on the outside of their trousers! There is a rumour circulating that the Principal, Mr Matthews dressed up as a fireman and went around the school squirting staff and students with a CO² fire extinguisher...surely not! A great day was had by all who participated.

OTA HIGASHI JAPANESE STUDENT VISIT
13 students and 2 teachers from Ota Higashi High School, Japan, arrived at Hebron Christian College on Monday 26th July and spent 9 days being homestayed by Hebron families. On most mornings, they learnt English langauage and in the afternoons, they integrated with Hebron classes or went sightseeing at the Auckland Zoo and visiting Sheepworld near Warworth. (see photos below). The Ota Higashi students have all been well behaved and their homestay families have all enjoyed their presence in their homes. We all say "Sayonara" to our friends from Ota Higashi High School

The annual Celebration Day Tabloid Sports Afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part...from our youngest 5 year olds to our Year 10 students who acted as team leaders. Our Photo of the Week shows Luka Crosbie and Milla Farac after they competed in the Water Relay, carrying water on their head trying to fill a bucket of water.
WORKING BEE
This week's working bee was attended by about 30 people and we are thankful for the time and effort they gave to beautifying our school.
