Food Technology

MAGGI KITCHEN SHOWDOWN 2010
Food Technology 2010 started off with a team of year 7 and 8 students entering a cooking competition in association with The Erin Simpson Show. Watch for them on the first Thursday in September.

Food Technology is one strand of the National Technology Curriculum. The focus is no longer just a manual skills based programme, but one of research, design, planning, problem solving, development of ideas, use of technological practices, and evaluation of outcomes.

YEAR 7&8 CLASSES (two terms)
Year 7&8 classes focus firstly on food safety, hygiene, and safe practices in the kitchen. They start to learn basic kitchen skills, then get creative designing and making: salads, grilled "melts" and muffins, among other things.
Along the way we learn about different appliances and cooking methods.

Term 2 is a study of food from other cultures. This year we will research and cook food from: Scotland, Germany, Samoa, Korea, and Mexico.

YEAR 9 CLASS (two terms)
Year 9 spend their term of Food Technology focusing on serving others. The unit is called "Hospitality". Romans 12:13 "Always be eager to practise hospitality"
I Peter 4:9 "Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay"
Hebrews 13:2 "Don't forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realising it".

Each lesson is based on a real life situation, with briefs ranging from a planned meal for invited guests, to unexpected visitors..

YEAR 10 CLASS(two terms)
This is an option course., from research, to designing, marketing, production, feedback, and evaluation. They may choose either a new cereal or snack bar.

Here two new cereals are being tasted by Mrs Huston, out librarian.

The next unit is a look at current health issues, and how to cook for those with specific needs. These may include: diabetes, gluten intolerance, low GI/high GI debate, wholegrains, fats, vegetarianism, anti oxidants, probiotics, omega 3, organic food. Each student will choose a current topic, present their findings to the class, and choose a suitable recipe for everyone to make.
